A Word from the Convention Director

As you already know, SPEAQ is the professional association for ESL teachers of all levels in the province of Quebec. It plays a capital role in promoting every aspect of the teaching and learning of English as a second language, as well as providing support in ongoing professional development. The annual convention, our biggest event of the year, is an excellent occasion to get new ideas, meet and listen to great keynote speakers and workshop leaders and exchange with colleagues from all over Quebec. Therefore, it is my pleasure to invite you to attend this year’s convention at the Hilton in Quebec City on November 15–17, 2012. We have chosen as this year’s theme “Celebrating Success!” because we are celebrating our 40th anniversary and we would like to celebrate all the little and big successes we’ve had over the years! There will be special activities so make sure you’re part of this very special event. Again this year, we will have passionate and inspiring keynote speakers. We try to invite speakers from different backgrounds and fields to inspire and feed participants new knowledge, year after year. On Friday morning, we will welcome Veronica McDermott, who will talk about how to recognize success, your own as teachers and your students’ as well. On Saturday morning, we will have François Guité. He will talk about how to make use of technology in a successful way. The call for presentations form will be on the website soon so I would ask you to please consider giving a workshop alone or with a colleague. We are always looking for new workshop leaders and new ideas. Please complete the Call for Presentations form as soon as possible on our website. All the information concerning the upcoming convention is available on the website in the Conventions section. I am looking forward to seeing all of you at the convention in November.

This Year’s Keynote Speakers:

Veronica McDermott

Veronica McDermott believes that deep learning and inspired teaching are wondrous acts of transcendent hope that should belong to every child and every teacher. Further, she believes that educators, families and students possess unacknowledged resources to transform underperforming schools into oases of success.

François Guité

As an English teacher in an International Education Programme, François Guité was keen in exploring new teaching methods. Intrigued from the outset by the possibilities offered by computer technology, he formed a working group to study their relevancy in teaching and learning, which led to postgraduate studies, followed by a stint in the private sector at L'Infobourg. After going back to teaching, he continued professional experimentation in a sort of research in action. During his last years of teaching, he experimented with autonomous learning and inverted instruction.
